Chiropractic Care

spineChiropractic care is based on the science of locating restricted spinal structures and reducing their interference to the nervous system without the use of drugs and surgery. Chiropractic care is a natural healthcare approach in which the body heals itself through preventive care. A healthy lifestyle and normally functioning body make-up consisting of cells, tissue, organs, nerves, joints and an aligned spine together improve your spinal health.

The human spinal column is made of bones stacked on top of each other like building blocks called vertebrae. In between each vertebrae is a spongy cushion called a disc, and traveling through the column of bones from the brain downward is the spinal cord. The spinal cord itself branches out its nerves as they exit from a small opening and innervates correlating muscles and organs. There are intrinsic muscle fibers that are parallel on both sides of the vertebral column that travel from the neck area to the lower back area.

spineMisalignment or subluxation of the vertebrae occurs when the vertebral joint is not in its normal position. This is due to muscle weakness, which results in inflammation, pain, swelling and pressure on the nerve. This is also known as a “pinched nerve” in laymen´s terms.

Another cause of pressure on the nerve occurs from swelling or herniation of the disc. This is also known as a “slipped disc” in laymen´s terms. The results are similar to that of muscle weakness, it may occur in the neck, mid-back or/and lower back regions. Other symptoms that may occur are numbness, tingling, burning, or shooting pain or discomfort down the arms into the hands and fingertips or down the buttocks into the legs, feet and toes, on one side or both, as well as restricted movement in that symptomatic area or body part.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Will my health insurance cover chiropractic benefits, and do I need a referral from my primary doctor first?
A: Today, most insurance companies cover chiropractic benefits from 70%-100%. Most insurance companies do not require you to obtain a referral depending on the type of insurance coverage, ex. PPO POS, EPO, HMO, but check with your health plan first.

Q: Who benefits from chiropractic care?
A: Everyone, from children to expectant mothers to the weekend athlete to the elderly benefit from chiropractic care.

Q: Will I end up going to a Chiropractor for the rest of my life?
A: As with any other medical doctor, (e.g., a Dentist, Family Doctor, OBG-GYN) you would normally go for a twice yearly or annual check-up, unless a problem arises, the same applies to your doctor of Chiropractic medicine. After your initial problems are no longer symptomatic, maintenance care, whether it is monthly or 3-6 months, is advised.

Q: What is that "cracking" noise I hear when I get adjusted?
A: The "cracking" noise is a liberation of synovial gases as the articular surfaces of the vertebral joints are adjusted (e.g., "cracking" your knuckles).
